Understanding an Achilles Tendon Rupture

An Achilles tendon rupture is an injury that happens when there is sudden and overwhelming pressure put on the Achilles tendon – the band of fibrous tissue that links the muscles of the calf to the heel. There will usually be a popping noise and intense pain with this injury and the area may burn and become swollen and stiff. You will have trouble standing and pushing off from that leg. Rest, cold compresses, physical therapy, and attention to a proper diet can all help, but this condition is slow to heal. A podiatrist can perform what is known as the Thompson Test to determine if you have ruptured your Achilles tendon. This test consists of a simple manipulation of the back of the calf, specifically, your soleus complex muscle group. If the area does not tense up and bend (a natural reflex of the manipulation), you may have ruptured this major tendon or there has been a detachment of the tendon from the muscle or bone. A consultation with a podiatrist is suggested if you suspect you have injured or ruptured your Achilles tendon for a proper treatment plan.

Achilles tendon injuries need immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact Dr. Thong V. Truong of California. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can create immense difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.

What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?

There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms

  • Inflammation
  • Dull to severe pain
  • Increased blood flow to the tendon
  • Thickening of the tendon

Rupture Symptoms

  • Extreme pain and swelling in the foot
  • Total immobility

Treatment and Prevention

Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:

  • Thorough stretching of the tendon before and after exercise
  • Strengthening exercises like calf raises, squats, leg curls, leg extensions, leg raises, lunges, and leg presses

Why Is My Ankle in Pain?

Ankle pain may also be caused by various forms of arthritis within the ankle joint, such as osteoarthritis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, Reiter syndrome, or even septic arthritis — which is caused by a bacterial or fungal infection. Ankle sprains are one of the most common sources of ankle pain. They occur when the ligaments that bind and support the ankle bones become stretched beyond their limit or even tear. Tarsal tunnel syndrome occurs when the tibial nerve — within the tarsal tunnel on the inside of the ankle — becomes compressed. Ankle tendonitis can occur when a tendon that connect muscles to bones in the ankle becomes irritated, swollen, and painful. Even poor circulation can lead to pain and discoloration in the feet and ankles. No matter the cause of your ankle pain, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist to have your condition diagnosed properly and treated accordingly.

Ankle pain can be caused by a number of problems and may be potentially serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with Dr. Thong V. Truong from California. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Bursitis
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

How to Protect Your Feet as You Age

Foot care gets more inconvenient for the elderly, sometimes because it is just hard to reach your feet, and other times because an underlying condition makes it nearly impossible. There are a few simple ways for the elderly to practice foot care. Because the fatty pads that protect the soles of the feet may have thinned, one way is to wear shoes that fit properly, provide adequate arch support and cushioning for your heels while also avoiding walking barefoot at home. Try not to sit with your feet hanging down for long periods, and instead, keep them elevated as often as possible, especially if you are less active. Exercising the feet and ankles is a good idea in order to keep the blood flowing and reduce swelling. Practice good skin care, such as keeping your feet clean and dry, applying moisturizer to prevent cracked heels, and having calluses removed. Trim toenails straight across, to avoid ingrown nails that can become infected. If your feet are uncommonly cold, seem numb, red, bruised or swollen on a regular basis, or if they have sores that do not heal properly, it is a good idea to consider regular visits to a podiatrist who can keep on top of these symptoms and provide proper treatment before they worsen.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact Dr. Thong V. Truong from California. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

Plantar Warts Can Be Treated!

Plantar warts are small growths that develop on parts of the feet that bear weight. They're typically found on the bottom of the foot. Don't live with plantar warts, and call us today!

The Pesky Plantar Wart

Viral infections caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) that enter the skin of the feet can cause plantar warts. These are fleshy growths that typically form on the bottom of the feet. The pressure from walking can cause plantar warts to be painful. Plantar warts can grow individually, or they may cluster in what is known as a mosaic. They present as flat, circular, grainy patches of skin that can be small or large. A tiny black blood vessel, appearing as a dot, is often visible in the center of a plantar wart, which can often distinguish it from other types of growths. HPV is a highly contagious virus that can be spread from direct contact, or through exposure to the virus living on infected surfaces, such as communal showers, locker rooms, towels, shoes, socks, and more. Plantar warts are hearty and difficult to treat on your own. They are known to return if they are not properly treated. For these reasons, plantar warts often require professional care from a podiatrist. Make an appointment with a podiatrist if you or someone you love has developed one or more plantar warts.

Plantar warts can be very uncomfortable. If you need your feet checked, contact Dr. Thong V. Truong from California. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

About Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are the result of HPV, or human papillomavirus, getting into open wounds on the feet. They are mostly found on the heels or balls of the feet.

While plantar warts are generally harmless, those experiencing excessive pain or those suffering from diabetes or a compromised immune system require immediate medical care. Plantar warts are easily diagnosed, usually through scraping off a bit of rough skin or by getting a biopsy.

Symptoms

  • Lesions on the bottom of your feet, usually rough and grainy
  • Hard or thick callused spots
  • Wart seeds, which are small clotted blood vessels that look like little black spots
  • Pain, discomfort, or tenderness of your feet when walking or standing

Treatment

  • Freezing
  • Electric tool removal
  • Laser Treatment
  • Topical Creams (prescription only)
  • Over-the-counter medications

To help prevent developing plantar warts, avoid walking barefoot over abrasive surfaces that can cause cuts or wounds for HPV to get into. Avoiding direct contact with other warts, as well as not picking or rubbing existing warts, can help prevent the further spread of plantar warts. However, if you think you have developed plantar warts, speak to your podiatrist. He or she can diagnose the warts on your feet and recommend the appropriate treatment options.
