Reasons That Ingrown Toenails May Occur

If you have ever experienced pain and tenderness on the side of your big toe, you may have what is known as an ingrown toenail. This is often the result of the toenail growing into the skin around the nail, and is often accompanied by pain and discomfort. If the toenail is severely ingrown, some of the symptoms experienced may be pus oozing from the area, swelling, or extensive bleeding. It is advised for diabetic patients to seek medical treatment immediately, which will aid in promoting proper healing. There are several causes of ingrown toenails, including wearing shoes and socks that fit too tightly, incurring an injury to the toe, or by having feet that sweat excessively. The latter reason typically allows the nail to cut through the soft skin surrounding it, and implants itself into the skin. If you feel you have an ingrown toenail, please consult with a podiatrist to learn about proper treatment techniques.

Ingrown toenails can become painful if they are not treated properly. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact Dr. Thong V. Truong of California. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.

Causes

  • Bacterial infections
  • Improper nail cutting such as cutting it too short or not straight across
  • Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, which causes the nail to grow back irregularly
  • Ill-fitting shoes that bunch the toes too close together
  • Genetic predisposition

Prevention

Because ingrown toenails are not something found outside of shoe-wearing cultures, going barefoot as often as possible will decrease the likeliness of developing ingrown toenails. Wearing proper fitting shoes and using proper cutting techniques will also help decrease your risk of developing ingrown toenails.

Treatment

Ingrown toenails are a very treatable foot condition. In minor cases, soaking the affected area in salt or antibacterial soaps will not only help with the ingrown nail itself, but also help prevent any infections from occurring. In more severe cases, surgery is an option. In either case, speaking to your podiatrist about this condition will help you get a better understanding of specific treatment options that are right for you.

Reminder: When Was the Last Time...?

Custom orthotics, or shoe inserts, should be periodically replaced. Orthotics must fit properly to give you the best results. Protect your feet and ankles!

The Benefits of Wearing Orthotics

Research has shown the purpose of wearing orthotics may have several benefits. These may include the possible prevention of uncomfortable conditions such as corns, foot ulcers, or calluses. Additional reasons why these devices might be used may aid in providing extra support for the foot or to possibly help correct any balance issues that may be present. One of the functions of a podiatrist is to properly assess the structure of the foot to determine what type of orthotic is best for the individual person. These custom made insoles are typically made of hard or soft materials and it may be advised to wear them gradually to allow the body to get used to them. If you feel you need to purchase orthotics, it’s suggested to speak to a podiatrist who will be able to discuss the benefits of these insoles and to possibly recommend custom made orthotic devices.

If you are having discomfort in your feet and would like to try orthotics, contact Dr. Thong V. Truong from California. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Are Orthotics?

Orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain but can’t correct serious biomechanical problems in your feet.

Over-the-Counter Inserts

Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct overarched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.

Prescription Orthotics

If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you or if you have a more severe foot concern, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high-quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and severe forms of heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.

If you are experiencing minor to severe foot or heel pain, it’s recommended to speak with your podiatrist about the possibilities of using orthotics. A podiatrist can determine which type of orthotic is right for you and allow you to take the first steps towards being pain-free.

How to Prevent Running Injuries

Many common running injuries are caused by overuse and overtraining. When the back of the kneecap starts wearing out and starts causing pain in your knee, this is commonly referred to as runner’s knee. Runner’s knee is a decrease in strength in your quadriceps and can occur if you’re not wearing properly fitted or supporting shoes. To prevent runner’s knee, focusing on hip strengthening is a good idea, as well as strengthening your quads to keep the kneecaps aligned.

What Are Some Causes of Running Injuries?
- One cause of a common running injury is called iliotibial band syndrome.
- Plantar fasciitis is also another common injury.
- Stress fractures can occur from overtraining, lack of calcium, or even your running style.

Best Ways to Prevent Running Injuries
- Wear footwear that fits properly and suits your running needs.
- Running shoes are the only protective gear that runners have to safeguard them from injury.
- Make a training schedule. Adding strengthening exercises as well as regular stretching can help keep you strong and limber and can lessen the possibility of injuries.
- Stretching keeps muscles limber; this will help you gain better flexibility.

Causes of Gout

If you ever have experienced gout, you may be well aware of the severe pain and discomfort that is typically associated with this condition. It generally occurs when a build-up of uric acid develops in the blood, and may lodge in the joints of the big toe. There are several symptoms that are indicative of gout, including an intense level of pain, swelling, and tenderness. Research has shown there are specific foods that may be ingested, which may cause gout. These may include eating an excess of red meat or shellfish, overindulging in alcoholic beverages, or drinking sugary beverages. Additionally, there may be a genetic factor that may cause gout, or taking certain medications may be a reason for this ailment to occur. There may be options you can perform, including practicing a healthy dietary lifestyle, ceasing smoking or losing any additional weight. It’s suggested to seek the counsel of a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and to begin the correct treatment.

Gout is a painful condition that can be treated. If you are seeking treatment, contact Dr. Thong V. Truong from California. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.
